Have you got the genetics for football?

Your genetics, the DNA you’ve inherited which influences what you become – are they helping or preventing you from becoming a better footballer?

Is it even worth thinking about?

Often a person’s genetics can be used as an excuse for not “improving” or “achieving” what they want in the game.

But…

If you looked at all the players in the Premiership, or even looked at all the players who play at a professional level, you’d see that they all come in different shapes and sizes. They all have different strengths, weaknesses, qualities and attributes.

Sure, they may share some similar genes that give them a competitive edge, but there is a lot more to turning pro or improving your game than your genetics.

Whilst there is nothing you can do about your genetic make-up, it’s highly unlikely you are anywhere near your genetic ceiling.

The thing is, with good training, great nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices, we play a part in how our genes are expressed.

We’re not saying that Verne Troyer would earn a contract at Chelsea if only he got his training and nutrition right. We’re also not saying that Messi, Ronaldo, or Beckham weren’t born with genes that were favourable to their success.

What we are saying though is that you were born with the genes you have, and whilst there is nothing you can do to change this, you’ve still got significant potential to improve (and that’s true at whatever level you play!).

So, concentrate on the limiting factors that you do have control over; training, mindset, lifestyle and… NUTRITION! And see how far you can go!
