We don’t want to get into the whole debate about nature and nurture, but it’s safe to say that at what ever level you play, they’ll be better players on an individual skill basis.
We spoke previously about how teamwork can almost always beat more skilful players who are playing for themselves.
Today, we have three ways in which you, as an individual, can be better than more skilful players.
1) “Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard.” This is a quote by high school coach Tim Notke, and is a favourite of pro basketball’s Kevin Durant.
However much skill you’ve got, you can beat more skilful players who aren’t putting the effort in. You see it at every level; the skilful player doesn’t fancy it and is then beaten by the sheer effort of a less skilful player.
So, whether you’re on the pitch or at training, dig a little deeper and allow yourself to accept that there may be someone more skilful than you, but you won’t allow anyone to work harder than you!
2) Closely linked to the first point – If you feel you are lacking in certain skills, practice those skills!
Whether you believe that certain players (e.g. Beckham, Ronaldo, Messi) were born with ability, they wouldn’t be where they are now without the practice that went with it!
Putting in extra time to hone your skills can only ever improve your game!
3) Do the things that others don’t/won’t. For example, get to bed on time and get your nutrition sorted!
Whatever level you play at, you could be better by getting the basics right.
It sounds so obvious, but so many don’t. And, because so many don’t, it gives you a significant advantage if you do!
So many players think that they can get to the top via ability alone. The truth is that consistently getting enough rest and eating appropriately for your needs can make a massive difference to your game.
This is something that Player-Pal can help you with. Our service can help you get your nutrition right and take your game to the next level!
